This is an overview of the National Teacher Training Centre and its march towards development of Medical Education in our country.

In the 1970's, W.H.O. promoted a global training programme for medical teachers on Educational Science and Technology. University of Illinois was the nodal agency for this initiative. As a part of this initiative, Regional Teacher Training Centres (RTTCs) were set up by W.H.O. In South-East Asian, RTTCs were established at Thailand and Sri Lanka. In 1974, the Gov¬ernment of India consti¬tuted a Working Group on Continuing Medical Education, which recommended the establishment of Teacher Training Centres in India. As a ground work, a team of three senior faculty members of JIPMER were sponsored by the W.H.O. to undergo train¬ing in the RTTC, at Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, in 1975.

In view of the initiative taken by JIPMER in the field of Medical Education, the first National Teacher Training Centre was established in JIPMER, Pondicherry, in the year 1975. The first National Course was held in March 1976. The faculty development process continued and today we have a team of fifteen faculty members belonging to pre, para and clinical disciplines. The National Courses on Educational Science for Teachers of Health Professionals are held twice a year during the months of February and September. These courses are meant to sensitize the Medical Teachers and make them aware of the modern concepts of Educational Science and Technology. It is our fond hope that empowered teachers will make medical education skill-oriented and need-based. Further, we hope that trained teachers would provide leadership and help in setting up Medical Education Units/Cells in their institutions.

So far 81 National Courses have been conducted since March 1976 and more than 2000 participants from various medical colleges in India have been trained. Medical Teachers from developing countries, viz. Bangla Desh, Nepal, Mangolia and Afghanistan have also undergone training here.
We have assisted in development of Master Trainers for the T.N. Dr.M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai. We have also assisted active ME cells at RMMC, Chidambaram, JNMC, Belgaum, KMC, Manipal, Medical Colleges at Trivandrum, Visakhapatnam and Coimbatore, to achieve their goals. If required, we are prepared to extend to the best of our ability any help in this field to any Medical College in India.

The Centre has diversifying activities. We have conducted Training of Trainers [TOT] workshops for the health services of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and West Bengal. The centre has developed training modules on Evidence Based Management, Ethics, Research Methodology, Disaster Medicine and Hospital waste management. The centre has also conducted workshop for master trainers on “Integrated Disease Surveillance Project” funded by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. The Interns Orientation Programme on Quality Care and Postgraduate Orientation on Research Methodology - two innovative programmes of JIPMER which are much envied and followed by many colleges.

Tele-education programmes  were initiated from 2010 with the technical assistance and equipments provided by ISRO.
The Centre has been publishing a Bulletin titled "NTTC Bulletin" twice a year since 1994. We invite contributions from all the Alumni of NTTC, especially on the activities of ME cells and on educational projects.
